A good neighbor doesn’t drop in to visit without warning.

A woman who feared a burglar might have broken into her Haight district apartment last week discovered the intruder was a drunken neighbor whose key happened to work on her door, police said.

On Jan. 3, the woman was awakened by commotion in her living room and found a stranger in the apartment in the 700 block of Haight Street.

“The man appeared to be drunk and claimed to be home,” police said, citing the woman’s report to cops. The man then left the apartment.

The woman reported the matter to the police hours later. An officer interviewed the woman’s upstairs neighbor and found that he matched the intruder’s description, police said.

“He admitted to drinking heavily the night before,” police said.

The cop investigator discovered that the neighbor’s key opened the woman’s apartment door.

“The case was closed with an apology,” police said.
