Third Newsom press staffer leaves for PR firm

The second in command at Mayor Gavin Newsom’s press office is leaving for Burson-Marsteller, a public relations and communications firm.

Erin Garvey, the chief deputy communications director in the office, is the third Newsom staffer to join the firm, and the latest in a string to leave the mayor’s communications office.

Former Communications Director Nathan Ballard resigned in November and later joined Burson-Marsteller. Ballard was followed by Brian Purchia in April.

Former staffer Joe Arellano left the press office in May to be the vice president of communications for the Bay Area Council, a regional business-advocacy group.

"Erin has been incredibly hard worker in the Mayor's Office for two years and we wish her great success with her new endeavors,” said Newsom spokesman Tony Winnicker. “She is enormously talented and this is great advancement in her career. She was a dedicated worker and we are going to miss her."

Garvey, who has also served as a White House intern and led communications efforts for other politicians and organizations, will begin her job at the company on Aug. 1, according to press release from the firm.
