Thief walks out of prison, drives off in nearby tow truck

A man arrested on suspicion of stealing a tow truck that had been parked across the street from county jail in the South of Market district had just been let out of the correctional facility, according to police.

After being released from the Seventh Street jail on his own recognizance, the crook crossed the street and stole the tow truck, Northern Station Police Capt. Anne Mannix said on Twitter on Tuesday.

The tow truck had been parked in front of the auto return, where cars towed on San Francisco’s streets are stored.

Further information about the arrest was not immediately available.
