They rock because they’re steady

We’re now at the halfway point in the season and you’d think that more fantasy football owners would have their rosters up to date with all the right players who have played their way out of the free-agent wire. But I’m still looking around and seeing plenty of players who are worthy of a roster spot. Their stats aren’t necessarily whopping, but they’ve been so steady this season that they have fallen under the radar and have been passed up for nobodies putting up aberration performances.

With that in mind, here’s a quick look at who they are:

» David Garrard: Before he got hurt, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback was putting up more fantasy points than a handful of QBs who wound up being drafted, including Joey Harrington, Chad Pennington, Damon Huard — even Philip Rivers. Even though Garrard is out for three more weeks, he’s worth a pickup in case your starter gets hurt.

» Jeff King: A lot of owners who couldn’t get Antonio Gates tried to gamble and take the next best thing — possibly Vernon Davis, Alge Crumpler or Chris Baker. But the Carolina Panthers’ tight end has more receptions and yards than any of those three. He’s even got more catches and yards than Benjamin Watson — but Watson has more touchdowns.

» Seattle Seahawks’ defense: Those who couldn’t lock up San Diego or New England — and are probably stuck with Houston or Philadelphia — consider this: The Seahawks are fourth in sacks (23), have given up the third-least points (100) and have more fantasy points than Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Indianapolis. They could be the difference between sneaking into the playoffs or settling for the consolation bracket.

STONE-COLD LOCK: Chris Cooley vs. Jets. After catching nine passes for 103 yards in Week 6, the Washington Redskins’ tight end has caught a total of four passes for 34 yards in Weeks 7 and 8. But against a suspect New York Jets defense that can’t seem to stop anyone, Cooley could have a great day (and great in tight end terms usually means about 75 yards and a score). So expect no more than that.
