What were you making for the baking challenge and how did you find the recipe?

I enter a lot of cooking contests and I use my own recipes. Since it was Rodelle, and they’re known for their baking supplies, I thought everyone would do something sweet, so I tried to think out of the box. I thought Rodelle’s anise would be good in a fennel gratin, and I had some spaghetti squash, so that’s where the recipe for the Caramelized Maple Spaghetti Squash came from.

What went wrong?

I put it in the oven and then I thought I’d take a short nap. I was at the tail-end of my pregnancy though, and I passed out for three hours. The squash exploded and I slept through it, but my husband saw it and photographed the disaster for me.

Did you ever think you could win a prize by having a kitchen fluke?

I did not! This was a new one for me. I didn’t think I could win by having a massive explosion in my oven. It was horrible and took forever to clean up. I am looking forward to baking with my prize though, a new Kitchen Aid mixer.
