The security-industrial complex: John Murtha and the Anthrax vaccine

Michael Goldfarb has an excellent investigative blog post up at our sister publication, the Weekly Standard. You should read the whole thing, but the bare-bones is this: Tara O'Toole, an undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security, is tied to Murtha, who is under an ethics cloud regarding pay-to-play suspicions.

Goldfarb writes:

In addition to running the Center for Biosecurity, O’Toole advised the Alliance for Biosecurity, which we now know PharmAthene basically runs. As the Washington Times reported, “President Obama’s nominee at the Department of Homeland Security overseeing bioterrorism defense has served as a key adviser for a lobbying group funded by the pharmaceutical industry that has asked the government to spend more money for anthrax vaccines and biodefense research.”

PharmAthene, it turns out, just got a sole-source contract for an anthrax vaccine from DHS, causing the company's stock to nearly double. Again, read Goldfarb's piece.
