The pros and cons of the Pledge for America

National Review’s Ramesh Ponnuru — one of the right’s best policy minds — has a great run down of what he likes  about the GOP’s Pledge for America over at the Washington Post. A sampling of what he likes:

1) It promises to cut discretionary spending. The objection that Republicans should have itemized all the programs they would cut strikes me as wrongheaded. You set an overall budget target before allocating the funding.

And what he doesn’t like:

1) It promises federal legislation to reform medical malpractice. Why shouldn’t states set their own policies?

There’s a lot more at the link. Be sure and read it all.
