The Daily Outrage: Toxic waste illegally left on federal property

WHAT: Illegal dumping of garbage on federal Bureau of Land Management property.

WHAT IS BEING DUMPED: Old electronics and waste such as water heaters, paint cans, vending machines, furniture and toilets are being abandoned at illegal dumpsites. Toxic materials also are being abandoned, including junk from meth labs and solvents.

WHERE: Illegal dumping is inundating federal property across the U.S., creating toxic hazards and expensive cleanup efforts.

HOW MUCH: The agency doesn’t keep a nationwide tab on the number of illegal dumpsites, but hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent each year to clean them. In Utah, agency officials estimate that they’ve spent more than $125,000 to clean up electronics since 2005.
