The Daily Outrage: Neighborhood violence

WHO: The Federal Bureau of Investigation

WHAT: Although homicides are dropping nationally and statewide, San Francisco and San Mateo counties are seeing an upswing in killings, according to FBI statistics released this week. San Francisco, in particular, is struggling with violence in certain neighborhoods.

WHY IT’S HAPPENING: The FBI’s report offered few answers. San Francisco police have attributed at least some of the recent violence in areas such as the Mission district to gang and drug-related activity.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Violent crime leaves residents feeling insecure in their own homes, inevitably strikes some innocent victims and gets in the way of efforts to revitalize neighborhoods.
