The Daily Outrage: Lower-income children unprepared for school

WHO: San Francisco kindergartners

WHAT: Nearly half of all children starting kindergarten in San Francisco public schools lack basic “readiness skills,” according to a report released this week.

WHY IT’S HAPPENING: The Applied Survey Research found that the least-prepared kindergarteners were concentrated in lower-income areas of The City.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Unprepared kindergartners are at a disadvantage in school right from the start.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The Preschool for All program, launched in 2005 and intended to provide free preschool to all 4-year-olds in The City, is expanding. It will eventually reach 4,800 of San Francisco’s 6,000 4-year-olds.
