The Daily Outrage: DC police called ‘sometimes the worst drivers’

WHAT: Washington, D.C., police are involved in hundreds of “preventable accidents ... that could have been avoided had the drivers adhered to traffic laws and basic roadway etiquette.” Officers wrecked their patrol cars 237 times last fiscal year and more than 600 times the year before. AAA charged that the region’s officers are “sometimes the worst drivers out there.”

HOW: In fiscal year 2009, Police Department employees sideswiped vehicles in parking lots, reversed into numerous “fixed objects” and opened their doors into traffic.

SCANT CONSOLATION: At least officers haven’t killed anyone since 2007, when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a police cruiser while crossing a street.
