The Daily Outrage: CentCom goes on a shopping spree

Who: Department of Defense

What: U.S. Central Command spent $4,230 through a federally funded credit card program on commemorative coins and bought two TVs that cost $2,100. Commanders purchased cigar boxes, 25 clocks and 40 pen sets they claim were gifts to distinguished citizens or foreign dignitaries.

Why it's an outrage: In the fiscal year ending July 1, 2009, $7.9 million of federal funds were spent through the program. Out of 7,000 purchases 120 were reviewed and 10 deemed inappropriate, spent on prohibited items or otherwise not properly recorded. Commanders even used multiple credit cards to cheat the $3,000 limit restriction.

Where to vent: Call the inspector general at 813-827-6660.
