The Daily Outrage: Captain gets medal, reprimand for same battle

WHO: U.S. Army Capt. Matthew Myer

WHAT: Myer received the Silver Star for his valor in repelling a Taliban attack on his heavily outnumbered combat outpost in eastern Afghanistan in 2008. Now he has also gotten a written reprimand for failing to properly secure the base before the attack.

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: No reason for the reprimand has been released. But Army officials acknowledge the base, built to protect an adjacent village, was at the bottom of a valley surrounded by high hills — an almost impossible location to defend.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Myer and his two senior commanders — also reprimanded despite not being at the base during the attack — are expected to present their appeals this week to the four-star general who headed the investigation.
