The Daily Outrage: California’s top delinquent taxpayer owes $13 million

WHAT: On the California Franchise Tax Board’s annual list of the state’s top 250 delinquent taxpayers, the CNET co-founder is way out in front. Minor and his wife owe California more than $13 million in personal income taxes, according to the state tax man. The distant runner-up scofflaw is a business owing $8 million.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Minor seems to be on a streak of bad debts lately. A New York City court recently ordered him to pay Sotheby’s auction house $6.6 million for reneged bids on artwork. He’s also locked in lawsuits with associates about a nine-story luxury hotel that was being built in Charlottesville, Va., until construction halted last year. Minor blames his cash-flow problems on Merrill Lynch, which put a billion-dollar freeze on his assets because of another set of lawsuits.
