The Daily Outrage: California casino ATMs accept welfare debit cards

WHAT: Welfare recipients can use their state-issued debit cards to withdraw cash from ATMs on gaming floors in more than half of California’s tribal casinos and licensed poker rooms.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: The state Department of Social Services provides these debit cards to help welfare recipients feed and clothe their families. Officials are trying to figure how much welfare money was withdrawn from casino ATMs.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who learned of the issue when asked to comment by the press, promised immediate action to block unauthorized usage of taxpayer money at California gaming sites.
