Crime wave: Excelsior district homicides cause concern

WHO: Police Chief Heather Fong

WHAT: There have been eight homicides in the Excelsior district since March 29, including the shooting that killed Tony Bologna and two of his sons.

WHY THEY’RE DOING IT: The Police Department has increased police in the area and imposed a gang injunction. Both are in response to the increased in violent crime, which Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, whose district includes the Excelsior neighborhood, said “cannot go on.”

WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA: Even though the current responses to the violence in the Excelsior district is a good start, there needs to be more than a knee-jerk reaction to crime in The City. The police need to find out how much of this crime is gang-related and crack down on the perpetrators.

WHERE TO VENT: The Police Commission meets Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in Room 400 at City Hall.
