The Daily Outrage: American Airlines workers in Puerto Rico allegedly smuggled narcotics

WHO: Nine American Airlines ground employees in Puerto Rico

WHAT: Baggage handlers and other ground crew at Puerto Rico’s main airport have been charged with being in a gang that smuggled nearly 20,000 pounds of cocaine during the past decade to destinations such as Miami, Orlando and New Jersey.

WHY: As a U.S. territory, Puerto Rico is a favored shipment point for South American cocaine and heroin. Once the drugs reach the Caribbean island, they do not have to pass through customs on the way to
the mainland.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The DEA and FBI arrested 22 members of the alleged smuggling ring during predawn raids Tuesday.
