The Daily Outrage: Airport security forces disabled child to remove leg braces

WHAT: Camden, N.J., cop Bob Thomas’ disabled 4-year-old son wasn’t allowed through Philadelphia airport security unless he took off his leg braces and hobbled through the gate without help. Young Ryan Thomas was born 16 weeks prematurely. He has malformed ankles and legs with poor muscle tone. He’s just now starting to walk.

WHY IT WAS A BAD IDEA: The airport screeners did not follow Transportation Security Administration policy. They should have allowed the parents to bring the boy to a private screening area.

WHAT’S BEING DONE: The airport’s TSA security director called Ryan’s parents to apologize after the story was printed in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The director gave them the name of the agency’s customer service representative in case the family experiences future problems.
