The Daily Outrage: Airlines required to check updates within two hours

WHAT: The federal government finally started requiring airlines to check no-fly lists within two hours of being notified about updates — an improvement made only after the accused Times Square bomber successfully boarded a flight to Dubai approximately eight hours after being added to the no-fly list.

WHY: No-fly security doesn’t work fully unless airlines make timely checks of new list information. Until now, airlines had a 24-hour deadline for checking no-fly lists after receiving an automated update notification. Faisal Shahzad almost escaped, but authorities identified him in time to call the plane back from the runway and arrest him.
