Teenager killed in shooting near Bayview school

A 15-year-old was fatally shot midday Tuesday across from a high school campus in Bayview while students were inside taking their final exams.

A single black suspect, age 17 or 18, shot the younger boy on Somerset Street, directly across from Philip and Sala Burton High School on Mansell Street about 12:30 p.m., San Francisco police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said. The campus also houses Leadership High School.

The victim has not been identified. He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was not a student at Burton or Leadership, according to Burton Principal William Kappenhagen.

The schools were locked down following the incident. Students were kept in classrooms withthe blinds drawn, and nobody was allowed in or out of campus until police cleared the scene, according to Kappenhagen.

Today, counselors will be on hand at Burton’s wellness center for any students who need to talk about what they might have seen or heard, according to district officials.

The victim is The City’s 48th homicide victim this year, and one of several teenagers slain in San Francisco this year, Williams said.

Two 15-year-olds were shot and killed in 2007, including Eddie Valdo on June 17 and Gregory Jones in June 30. Chris Garcia, a Daly City 16-year-old, was also killed in the June 30 shooting.

In addition to the shooting suspect, police are also looking for a white vehicle and another suspect who was driving it, Williams said.
