Teen arrested in connection with cellphone thefts in Chinatown

A teenager was arrested in connection with two separate cellphone thefts in Chinatown on Tuesday, police said.

A 35-year-old man and 64-year-old woman were in the area of Pacific Avenue and Stockton Street about 10:30 a.m. when the 17-year-old boy reportedly grabbed a cellphone out of the man's pocket. The man then slapped the phone out of the boy's hand and the boy responded by punching the man, police said. The woman tried to help the man and was also punched by the boy, who then fled with the cellphone.

Later, the boy came back and asked a 48-year-old woman if he could use her cellphone. She agreed and he took off with the phone.

The first two victims had reported the theft to police. When officers responded to the second incident, they found the suspect in possession of both phones.
