Tax penalty for businesses goes before supes

On Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee will hold a hearing on legislation introduced by Mayor Gavin Newsom and sponsored by the tax collector office that would increase penalties for businesses underreporting their taxes.

Nine hundred and twenty-two businesses were audited by the tax collector last year and about 129 were found to have substantially underreported their taxes. Hey, not only is the city struggling with a deficit, but the tax collector office needs technology upgrades, and a portion of the revenue from the new penalties would help fund those upgrades.

The committee meets at 11 a.m. at City Hall in Room 250.
