Taliban ratchets up attacks: Spring offensive underway

Taliban fighters are ratcheting up attacks on secured Afghan government facilities and U.S. military bases as their spring offensive gets underway. Early Monday morning insurgents infiltrated Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry in Kabul, and killed several soldiers before security personnel were able to kill the attackers, according to reports from the region.

The men were wearing Afghan National Army uniforms, when they were apparently allowed inside the secured facility. It is the same style of attack that took place Friday when insurgents wearing police uniforms infiltrated Kandahar’s police headquarters. A suicide bomber in that attack killed Kandahar Police Chief Brigadier General Khan Mohammed Mujahid.

In an attack on Saturday, an insurgent also wearing an Afghan military uniform killed five Americans and seven Afghan soldiers when he infiltrated Forward Operating base Gamberi, in Eastern Afghanistan, and detonated explosives, according to U.S. officials and reports in the region.
