Swimmer temporarily detained after false weapons report

A 29-year-old Wyoming man swimming in the Bay this morning was picked up by a ferry boat and briefly detained, after the purveyors of the ship mistakenly believed he was carrying dangerous weapons.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was seen struggling in the choppy Bay waters near Alcatraz Island at roughly 5:30 a.m., according to Lt. Simone Mausz of the United States Coast Guard.

A boat in the Blue and Gold ferry fleet picked up the swimmer, who was outfitted in a camouflage wetsuit and had an underwater camera, Mausz said. The ferry captain mistakenly believed the camera was the butt of the gun, and the swimmer was subsequently taken to the Tiburon Police Department.

The man was questioned at the police department, and after it was determined he did not possess any weapons, he was let go, Mausz said.
