Suspect held after high-speed chase across closed bridge

A carjacking suspect led authorities on a pursuit at speeds of over 100 mph across the closed Bay Bridge tonight, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

CHP Officer Shawn Chase said a Dodge Nitro, which had reportedly been carjacked, was spotted at about 10:20 p.m. entering eastbound Interstate Highway 80 from Sterling Street in San Francisco.

"We tried to stop the vehicle and it continued eastbound through the barricade,'' Chase said.

CHP officers pursued the suspect across the bridge, but stopped the chase due to safety concerns.

The vehicle was then located abandoned at about 10:35 p.m. at 79th Avenue and International Boulevard and Oakland police detained the suspect in the area short time later, Chase said.
