Supes may push public safety merger

Supervisor Chris Daly has proposed for November ballot a charter amendment that would fold the Police Department into the Sheriff’s Department.

One provision takes all control away from the police chief and hands it to the sheriff, a role currently long held by Sheriff Michael Hennessey.  It’s not one of Daly’s new ideas. And when he first proposed it some years ago it didn’t go anywhere. On Friday, the Board of Supervisors Rules Committee will vote on whether to send the measure to the full board. It takes six votes from the full board to make it on to the ballot.

The committee meets Friday at 10 a.m. at City Hall in Room 263.
