Supervisor John Avalos wants more spontaneity in question time with Ed Lee

Supervisor John Avalos wants to put “a little more spontaneity” into question time with the mayor.

A ballot measure approved by voters in November requires the mayor to show up during one board meeting each month to engage in a formal policy discussion, but it leaves the format up to the Board of Supervisors to adopt.

The format was submitted for approval by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu in consultation with Mayor Ed Lee.

The board postponed a vote on establishing the format Tuesday after Avalos said he wanted more time to discuss amendments with Lee that would bring “a little more spontaneity” to the process.

After the meeting Avalos said that he has a couple ideas under consideration, such as allowing questions to be asked about pre-set subject matters. Questions could also be asked on the spot by board members if a majority of the board votes to allow it.
