Supe giving break to smaller businesses

Smaller businesses – microbrewers and wine distributors – might be dodging a future fee on alcohol.

City supervisors signed off on a proposal for a fee on alcohol that could increase the cost of a beer by a little more than 3 cents. But Supervisor John Avalos – after hearing testimony from businesses and the community – said he would consider amending the proposal so that there is a small-business exemption of some sort. “I think larger businesses are providing a great deal of alcohol consumption,” Avalos said.

The proposal will go to the full board for review on Sept. 7.
