Summer is almost over for city students

In three weeks, San Francisco Unified School District will reconvene for the 2010-11 school year, one week earlier than ever before. School starts Aug. 16 for public school children.

According to district officials, the early start will adjust the school semesters. It will allow schools to hold final exams and reports before the winter break in December. It will also, at the high school level, allow students to change their schedules before the spring semester.

Four furlough days are also scheduled with the new calendar. School will let out before Memorial Day next year.

The district is also debating whether to allow high school students to sleep in an extra hour to allow them more rest, but also prevent crime in the early evening when students are thought to have nothing to do.
