Styx, Yes recording new material, will play Shoreline in August

Still humming all those hair-metal hits, days, weeks after you caught “Rock Of Ages”? Here’s some fun news.

Two bands from that era (well, a little before, actually, but they were quite active in the ’80s) are hard at work on new material.

Styx is currently putting the finishing flourishes on “Regeneration, Volume 2,” which follows volume one in reimagining some of their catalog classics, like “Renegade,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Too Much Time On My Hands.” And according to band guitarist Tommy Shaw, one of his key prog-rocking influences was Yes — the acoustic intro to “Roundabout” was one of the first filigrees he learned.

So it’s nice to note that Yes — guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White and new Jon Anderson replacement vocalist Benoit David — are also wraping a new record, “Fly From Here,” produced by ex-Buggle Trevor Horne and out on July 12.

On tour, Yes will be joined by another Buggle, longtime Rick Wakeman stand-in Geoff Downes.

And oh yeah! Did we mention that these two supergroups are actually touring together this summer?

We didn’t? Sorry about that!

They are, in a juggernaut that hits the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View on Aug. 3

Didn’t see that one coming in your “Crystal Ball,” huh?
