Stow Lake could have new owners driving boathouse

The family that has run the Stow Lake Boathouse for 65 years has met its competitor.

Recreation and Park Department officials said Thursday that a panel chose Ortega Family Enterprises — which has a history of reorganizing park concessions, such as those at the Muir Woods National Monument — to potentially replace longtime manager Bruce McLellan.

Stow Lake, which is nestled between John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. drives in Golden Gate Park, is a popular destination, offering boat rentals and opportunities to observe various fowl, especially in spring when ducklings and goslings are abundant.

If the Recreation and Park Commission approves the suggestion at an Aug. 19 meeting, Ortega will change the fleet of boats and build a small cafe. Staff said the pink popcorn, animal crackers and pretzels will remain, along with the architectural charm of the facility.

Park officials say they expect a 30 to 40 percent increase in revenue.
