State giving crime lab a break on testing

The Police Commission got some good news out of a bad situation Wednesday.

The Police Department was going to spend $75 to $125 each for 1,100 cases to be retested at the state Department of Justice in the wake of the drug lab debacle at a cost of more than $100,000.

But now the state’s lab is only asking for 25 percent of all cases tested by embattled lab tech Deborah Madden, and 25 percent of the cases tested by other criminalists, which should make for a slightly less expensive, and time-consuming, venture.
