State funds to preserve waterfront labor history

Spectacular waterfront redevelopment plans at Pier 70 in southeastern San Francisco remain underfunded, but a state grant could help preserve some of the area’s history.

The Port of San Francisco secured a $500,000 grant to help preserve the Union Ironworks Machine Shop.

$300,000 in Port funds will also be required for the project, under grant conditions stipulated by the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.

Port Commissioners are scheduled to vote on Tuesday to accept the grant.
