State Dept. cancels Saturday event as shutdown looms

The U.S. State Department cancelled a Saturday program that would make it easier to get passports because of the looming government shutdown.

"Because of a possible government shutdown, the Department of State must cancel 'Passport Day in the USA,'" the department announced in a statement Friday. U.S. citizens can obtain passports without appointment on "Passport Day."

"We regret that we cannot offer this service as planned," the statement read.
