Stanford, Cal face off in Pac-10 season finale

After clinching a share of its first Pac-10 Conference title in 50 years last weekend, Cal has a chance to lock up an outright championship with a win over rival Stanford on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both clubs. Tipoff on The Farm is set for 3 p.m.

The Bears (20-9, 12-5) enter the contest having won six of their past seven and appear to be peaking entering the Pac-10 and NCAA tournaments. They currently own a one-game lead over Arizona State in the standings, so either a win over the Cardinal or an Arizona State loss sews up the outright crown for Cal.

Meanwhile, Stanford (13-15, 7-10) is fresh off a pair of losses to the Arizona schools and is likely to miss the postseason entirely for the first time in 16 seasons.

Cal had no troubles when the two met the first time this season, dispatching of Stanford 92-66 on Jan. 2.

Saturday’s matchup will feature the two leading candidates for the Pac-10 Player of the Year Award in Cal point guard Jerome Randle and Stanford swingman Landry Fields.

The dimunitive Randle, who is averaging 18.9 points and 4.5 assists per game, is Cal’s emotional leader and floor general. When he is on from long distance, the Bears can be tough to beat.

Fields is having a superb senior campaign, averaging 22.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

NOTE: The Cal and Stanford women will square off in Berkeley at noon Saturday. That game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet California.
