Sports briefs: USF squeaks by Utah Valley state

The USF men’s basketball team traded baskets with Utah Valley State in the second half and managed to get by with a 67-64 victory. The Dons led the Wolverines 32-29 at halftime and led the entire second half, but had to survive a late run by the Wolverines. Manny Quezada scored 26 points, including four free throws in the final 14.6 seconds, for USF (3-3), while Dior Lowhorn added 19 points.

No. 6 Stanford dominates USF

Stanford guard Candice Wiggins had just 13 points, but it was because the No. 6 Cardinal (6-1) jumped so far ahead, she got plenty of rest in their victory over Necolia Simmons and USF 96-61 at Maples Pavilion. Freshman Kayla Pedersen led Stanford with 18 points while Shay Rollins led the Dons with 19 points. It was the first meeting between the two schools in nearly three years.

Cal knocks off Nevada

Cal men’s basketball forward Ryan Anderson was 14-for-24 from the field for a career-high 36 points as the Bears put together a 74-68 win over Nevada in Reno. Patrick Christopher added 16 points for the Bears and DeVon Hardin had 16 rebounds for the Bears, who improved to 4-0.
