Sports briefs: USF runners picked to finish second

The men’s and women’s cross country teams at USF have been picked to finish second in the West Coast Conference this season. In both sides of the preseason coaches’ poll, the Dons received the only first-place vote that didn’t go to Portland, which was picked as the runaway favorite. The Pilots have won 28 straight men’s titles and 17 of the 22 women’s crowns.

Kwame fuzzy on future

Since he attended Stanford, you know Kwame Harris isn’t a dummy. And the 49ers’ right tackle knows the writing is on the wall after losing his starting job following the third preseason game and not being active for Monday’s season opener. Harris, who was replaced in the lineup by rookie Joe Staley, has mixed emotions about the possibility of the Niners trading him in the final year of his contract. "I have funny feelings about it," said Harris, who had started 37 straight games before Monday. "I’m a little all over the place about it. I can’t say yes or no. From an economic standpoint, yes, but money can’t always be the bottom line. ... I don’t think they’re actively looking to get rid of me, but at the same time, I think if the right situation came up, they would go for it."
