Sports briefs: USF goes cold, falls to Pacific

The USF men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a disasterous first-half shooting performance and a hot Pacific team en route to an 84-57 loss at War Memorial Gymnasium. The Dons (3-5) went 7-for-28 (25 percent) in the first half and followed that up by going 11-of-27 (40.7 percent) in the second half. Meanwhile, Pacific shot 51.7 percent in the first half in taking a 38-20 lead.

Peterson is awed by fellow rookie Willis

When the Niners host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, you could be seeing a matchup of two future, longtime NFL stars. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has grabbed most of the headlines of this year’s rookie class, setting the NFL’s single-game rushing record. But Niners linebacker Patrick Willis has been racking up his own monster numbers. "He’s a freak," Peterson said of Willis. "Working out with him [before the draft], I saw the talent he has. The past two weeks, he has gotten 37 tackles. That’s not normal."
