Sports briefs: Two USF forwards ineligible

USF forwards Vince Polakovic and Jay Watkins will not travel with the men’s basketball team to Oklahoma for the 2K Sports Classic after they were declared ineligible. Watkins, a sophomore who was named to the West Coast Conference all-freshman team last season, is academically ineligible while the university is working with the NCAA to determine the eligibility of Polakovic.

Wiggins is named preseason All-America

If being projected to win its eighth straight Pac-10 Conference title doesn’t give the Stanford women’s basketball team enough swagger, the Cardinal have an All-America guard to help them do it this season. Senior Candice Wiggins was named to the preseason All-America team by the Associated Press. It’s the second time Wiggins has been named to the preseason All-America team. Joining her is Former Piedmont High School star Courtney Paris of Oklahoma, Tennessee’s Candace Parker, LSU’s Sylvia Fowles and Maryland’s Crystal Langhorne.
