Sports briefs: Tank wasn't loaded

The first piece of good news for Tank Johnson in a while: The recently released Chicago Bears defensive tackle was not legally drunk when he was pulled over in Gilbert, Ariz., on June 22. Police said Johnson’s blood alchol level was 0.072 — just under Arizona’s limit of 0.08. No charges have been filed in the case. Johnson has already been suspended eight games.

Duchscherer is lost by A’s for rest of year

A’s right-hander Justin Duchscherer, who earned an All-Star berth in 2005 as a setup man, had his season end before this year’s break for the Midsummer Classic when it was announced he will have surgery on his injured right hip. The dependable reliever, limited to 17 games this season, has been out since May 15 with soreness in his arthritic hip. The A’s bullpen, which was to be the team’s strong suit this year, has been decimated by injuries and promotions to the starting rotation.
