Sports briefs: Stanford suprisingly in first

Coming in as the 12th seed for the NCAA men’s golf championships at Williamsburg, Va., Stanford had modest expectations. After the first round, the bar has been raised. Junior Rob Grube shot a 6-under 64 to grab the individual lead and helped the Cardinal to a two-shot advantage over Coastal Carolina. Former Bellarmine star Daniel Lim added a 69, Zack Miller a 70 and Matt Savage a 72 for Stanford.

Trade me ... then don’t

Kobe Bryant went from feeling betrayed to loved by the Los Angeles Lakers all within a few hours. The immensely talented and often temperamental superstar told ESPN Radio that a team "insider" quoted by the Los Angeles Times made him feel like he wanted to be traded by the Lakers. "I would like to be traded, yeah," Bryant said. A few hours later, following a phone conversation with Lakers coach Phil Jackson, Bryant then backed off the demand and told team flagship radio station KLAC, "I don’t want to go anywhere, this is my team. I love ithere." Bryant still has four years remaining on his seven-year, $136.4 million contract, but he can opt out in two years. The insider said Bryant was a driving force behind the Lakers trading Shaquille O’Neal to the Miami Heat in 2004.
