Sports briefs: Sharks place Clowe on IR

The Sharks placed forward Ryane Clowe on injured reserve after he was diagnosed with a knee injury after Saturday’s loss to Columbus. Defenseman Rob Davison was also placed on injured reserve. Rookie Devon Setoguchi, the former No. 8 overall pick in 2004, and Lukas Kaspar were called up from Worcester to fill the roster spots.

A-Rod opts out of contract with Yankees

It looks like the A-Rod era could be ending in New York. Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the New York Yankees, a decision announced by agent Scott Boras during Game 4 of the World Series. Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the contract, of which $21.3 million was to be covered by payments from the Texas Rangers to the Yankees. Boras said during a telephone interview Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees.
