Sports briefs: S.F. State men win again

The San Francisco men’s basketball team picked up its third win in four games, improving to 5-3, with an 86-43 win over Golden State Baptist College. Senior guard David Van Someren led the Gators’ balanced scoring 11 points while forwards Ryan Wessels and Darryl Robinson each added 10 points. San Francisco State also outrebounded Golden State Baptist 48-23.

Former A’s announcer King a finalist for Frick Award

The late Bill King and his "Holy Toledo" catch phrase were involved in decades’ worth of radio sound bites when he was a broadcaster for the Warriors and Raiders. King also carved out a nice, 25-year career as the broadcaster for the A’s. This year, King is a finalist for the Ford C. Frick Award, given annually by the Baseball Hall of Fame for excellence in broadcasting. King was among three finalists — late Cincinnati Reds radio announcer Joe Nuxhall and ESPN’s Joe Morgan — who were selected through an online vote through the Hall’s Web site. Tom Cheek, Ken Coleman, Dizzy Dean, Tony Kubek, Graham McNamee, Dave Niehaus and Dave Van Horne are also on the ballot.
