Sports briefs: S.F. State blanks Sonoma State

The San Francisco State women’s soccer team is making a habit of pitching shutouts. The Gators (7-8-2, 5-5-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association) kept their opponents scoreless for the fourth time in six matches, beating Sonoma State 3-0. Myriah Johnson, Zoila Marquez and Sarah Reubel all scored for S.F. State.

Nalbandian shocks Federer in Madrid

David Nalbandian might not have the name recognition of the wold’s top tennis stars, but after his performance in the Madrid Masters, that might change. The Argentine defeated No. 1 ranked Roger Federer to take his first title since 2006. The road to Federer was hardly easy, either — he defeated No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Novak Djokovic to reach the championship match. "When I am physically and technically good, I can beat anybody," the former Wimbledon finalist said.
