Sports briefs: Raiders, 49ers sign backs

The Raiders signed running back Michael Bush, a fourth-round pick out of Louisville who was a Heisman Trophy contender until breaking a leg in the season opener. The Raiders cut safeties Jarrod Cooper, who was suspended four games last week, and Darnell Bing. The Niners signed running back Thomas Clayton, a sixth-round pick out of Kansas State.

Schilling pops off again

Baseball fans either love or hate Curt Schilling. Regardless, give the man credit for taking a stance. The injured Boston Red Sox right-hander said the silence by Giants slugger Barry Bonds and former A’s and St. Louis star Mark McGwire is tacit admission to using performance-enhancing drugs. "If someone wrote that stuff about me and I didn’t sue their [butt] off, am I not admitting that there’s some legitimacy to it?" he said on HBO’s "Costas Now." Bonds’ reaction? "Don’t worry, my day will come," he said before not starting against the Atlanta Braves. Bonds also had harsh words for Costas, saying he was a "midget who knows [nothing] about baseball."
