Sports briefs: Quick raise for Toskala

It didn’t take long for the Toronto Maple Leafs to lock up goaltender Vesa Toskala. Traded by the Sharks two weeks ago today, Toskala signed a two-year, $8 million extension with the Maple Leafs. The Finn, who will split time with Andrew Raycroft, will be paid $1.4 million next season under a deal he signed with the Sharks during the 2005-06 season.

Ailing A-Rod likely an All-Star no-go

Tuesday’s All-Star Game at AT&T Park may be about to see some of its star power dwindle. New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, the top vote-getter, said he will decide Saturday whether his strained left hamstring will be good enough to play in the Midsummer Classic. Rodriguez would still likely come to The City as he will be honored for receiving the most votes. Also, Atlanta right-hander John Smoltz’s All-Star status is questionable. He will see doctors about shoulder discomfort.
