Sports briefs: No punishment for Giambi

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig cited Jason Giambi’s charity work and cooperation with the steroids investigation when announcing he will not sanction the New York Yankees’ slugger for his use of illegal performance-enhancing drugs. "He was, I thought, very frank and candid with Sen. Mitchell, at least that was the senator’s conclusion," Selig said.

Clock ticking on Vick

Faced with a reported deadline of 9 a.m. today, Michael Vick’s team of lawyers were negotiating with federal prosecutors on a plea agreement that would likely put the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback in prison for about a year. Last month, Vick pleaded not guilty for his role in an illegal dogfighting operation. But his three co-defendents, who also initially pleaded not guilty in the polarizing case, have since entered into plea agreements, two of which are expected to be finalized today. Vick faces mounting pressure to get a deal done before prosecutors deliver a superceding indictment that would likely slap more severe charges against one of the NFL’s most talented players.
