Sports briefs: NLL cancels season

Don’t expect the San Jose Stealth to play any games anytime soon. That’s beacuse the National Lacrosse League canceled the season after failing to reach a labor agreement with the union. "The plan is to take the season off and try to get with the union and negotiate a deal that works for both parties and get back playing in ’09," NLL commissioner Jim Jennings said.

Legend Osborne returns as Nebraska’s interim AD

Hall of Fame coach Tom Osborne is synonymous to Nebraska the way Joe Paterno is to Penn State. Osborne returned to Nebraska as interim athletic director after Steve Pederson was fired Monday. Osborne, who led the Cornhuskers’ football team to three national titles in his last four seasons, will determine whether coach Bill Callahan stays or goes, but he won’t make the decision until after the season. "I don’t want to be someone who micromanages, watches over people’s shoulders," Osborne said. "If they want me to come to practice or go to meetings, I’ll go. If they want [me] to stay away, I’ll stay away."
