Sports briefs: Niners sign LB Willis

Looks like 49ers rookie linebacker Patrick Willis won’t be missing valuable time on the practice field. The No. 11 overall pick out of Mississippi signed a reported five-year deal with a maximum value of $16.7 million and total guarantees of $12 million. "I’m a team player and I wanted nothing more than to be on time and be here for camp," Willis said.

Gwynn, Ripken enshrined into Hall

The day finally came for Tony Gwynn, left, and Cal Ripken to be immortalized, and a record crowd was on hand to share the moment with them. Gwynn, the Padres’ hitting machine, and Ripken, the Orioles’ iron man, took their place at Cooperstown, N.Y., and were enshrined in the Hall of Fame in front of an estimated 75,000 fans and spectators. Gwynn and Ripken represent the first Hall of Fame class of inductees to have played their entire careers for just one team since Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski in 1989.
