Sports briefs: Niners' Oliver injures knee 

Defensive end Melvin Oliver, who started 14 games as a rookie last season for the 49ers, tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a noncontact drill Tuesday. The sixth-round pick out of LSU was already facing stiff competition from free-agent signee Aubrayo Franklin. The 49ers are also expected to sign free agent defensive lineman Sam Rayburn this week.

Will Giambi face Mitchell?

The curious case of Jason Giambi got curiouser when the New York Yankees’ slugger was asked by baseball to talk with George Mitchell, who is conducting the sport’s probe into the use of performance-enhancing drugs. But the players’ union immediately told Giambi to hold off on any potential meeting.

Donovan gets out of deal

Billy Donovan is a Gator once again.

Six days after signing a five-year, $25.75 million to jump to the NBA’s Orlando Magic, the coach is returning to two-time defending NCAA champion Florida after officially being let out of his deal. Stan Van Gundy could be the Magic’s new coach, although he is also negotiating with the Sacramento Kings.
